My Sister’s Place Women’s Shelter : Volunteerism [Baltimore Photographer]

Good karma is coming my way…..any minute now  🙂
Yesterday, my girlfriends and I (10 of us total) spent a few hours at My Sister’s Place Women’s Shelter under the direction of Miss Jerrie, who runs the kitchen there.  We had baked and brought with us, 6 lasagnas, made a huge salad, garlic bread, brownies & lemonade, enough to feed 80 women and children.  We prepared for the lunch crowd, peeled potatoes for the night’s dinner meal, and from 12-1pm, we served the 67 women & 5 children who came in.   Some of us formed the assembly line, and dished out the grub, and some of us were the runners, who delivered it to the tables, while drinks were served, and dishes were washed.
“Lovely Ladies/Hotties in Hairnets”  Miss Jerrie dubbed us the Lovely Ladies, and we had to  live up to this name by coming back to see her.  This was the second time our group has volunteered at MSP, and the feeling was the same – good times with our friends & feeling good about giving back.  The first time we volunteered was a Sunday breakfast, and we brought donuts & orange juice to compliment the meal that was being served by the kitchen.  All they got was a sausage patty, and fruit cocktail.   So we decided that we were going to bring the entire meal this time, to ensure they were getting a hearty, delicious Italian-style meal.  Several of the ladies came up to us, sincerely thanking us, and letting us know that the food was delicious.  The really tough part was seeing the kids – heartbreaking really.
I challenge each of you reading this to get involved with an organization – ANY organization – even for just an hour of your time.   It’s so easy, it doesn’t have to cost you anything but your time, and let’s face it – we can all use the good karma, right?!
If you need help looking for an organization, here is the Catholic Charities website, where you can search for the type of volunteer work you want to do, as well as the area.  http://www.catholiccharities-md.org/volunteer/
